The battery in the bq240 series of devices is charged in three phases: conditioning, constant current, and constant voltage. In all charge phases, an internal control loop monitors the IC junction temperature and reduces the charge current if an internal temperature threshold is exceeded.

The bq2405x series of devices are highly integrated Li-ion linear chargers targeted at space-limited portable applications. These devices operate from either a USB port or AC adapter, supporting a high input voltage range with input overvoltage protection for low-cost unregulated adapters. The devices have a single power output for charging the battery, and a system load can be placed in parallel with the charger. The applications targeted by these devices include smartphones, PDAs, MP3 players, and low-power handheld devices, offering features such as thermal regulation, shutdown protection, short-circuit protection, and fixed safety timers.

The maximum input current limit mode for an absent battery pack with a thermistor in the bq240 series of devices is the Termination and Timer Disable Mode (TTDM). When the battery pack is absent along with the thermistor, the TSpin will be driven high, and the charge will enter TTDM. If the battery pack is removed and the TSpin is held in the active region, the battery detect routine will continue until a battery is inserted. This feature allows for proper management and protection in the absence of a battery pack with a thermistor.
